How to Choose the Right Domain Name

A domain, web hosting and business email are three of the basic requirements for expanding a business online, but their importance can’t be emphasized enough. Choosing a domain name is one of the first, and most difficult, steps in getting a great new website created and operating. Although choosing a good domain name that you like is not difficult but finding an available domain that you like can be very time consuming but fun process.

If at all possible, buy a domain name that contains your most important keyword. This is incredibly useful for several reasons:

1. If anyone links back to your website, the domain name will be contained in the hyperlink. Every link with your domain name will then double as a keyword link, which also tells the search engines your site is relevant to the users’ queries.

2. Search engines consistently give extra weight to websites that contain the keywords a user is searching for. So if your business name is just “Anderson’s” but you are a plumber, then “andersonsplumbing.com” would be better than just “andersons.com” because the search engines recognize that your site is specifically relevant to plumbing.

3. At last, part of the search engine equation is the people who are actually using the search engines. Higher rankings are more useful, but only if people choose your site over the others listed on the search results page. By including a well-written Meta description and having the keyword in your domain name, it will be clear that your site is a good choice for them to click on.

Due to the number of websites on the web it is becoming increasingly more difficult to find the exact domain name you want. Therefore, it does not pay to be too rigid in your choice of names. Try and be more creative and come up with alternative names as these may work out just as well, or even better.
